Common Natives of Indiana Series

The Common Natives of Indiana is a series of FREE booklets and resources to help teach students about the native flora and fauna of Indiana and the importance of them to our ecosystem. They are designed with grades 3-5 in mind, but will be found enjoyable by readers of all ages! Below you will find download links for the booklets, WPA-inspired posters, slideshows, and resource and suggestion guides that contain web links to additional resources, ideas that can be implemented in and out of the classroom, and lesson ideas for ELA, Math, and STEM. Please share this FREE website and all materials with anyone you think might enjoy them.

Please note that each booklet is available in two different layouts for your ease of use, each in color or black and white. The first style is a booklet format. This means that you will need to fold each booklet after printing, and the pages will seem to be “out of order” until you fold them. Once folded the booklet will look like a “field guide” and “journal” for the students to use. The second style does not require any folding. The pages should remain “flat” and all you need is to staple the packet in the corner. The black and white booklets were designed with the idea that students could add color to the specimen photos on each page.

The posters are designed for 11” x 17” paper. However, they can be printed at any size you would like.

I hope you enjoy this series. I created it to share my love of the outdoors with my own two young daughters, who love reading about the fun facts and being able to spot and name what they’ve learned about during our family walks. Please leave comments at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!
